Tutees who need assistance with the class TECH 101 are usually not familiar with Mac or computer in general.

Terminology

Make sure to define technical terms with tutees during tutoring sessions. “Do you know what this [term] means?” Encourage tutees to ask when they don’t feel certain they understand a term you use.

Tip! Frequently encourage tutees to ask when they don’t feel sure they understand a term you are using.

File Management

Hierarchy file management is one of the basic college skills, which will become very handy to organize school works. Recommend every student to use hierarchy style file management. For instance, have students create folder for “School Work,” and under this folder, create a folder named “Spring/Fall 20XX.” Then, under this folder, a student can create folders for each class. (Ex. “School Work > Spring 2015 > English 101, Digital Photography, College Algebra, and 3D fundamentals”)

Spreadsheets

Excel spreadsheet provides unlimited possibilities to get things organized for your everyday activities. Depending on what you are working on, you can create spreadsheet to gather data and analyze statistically and visually. Or, you can simply make your own schedule for your classes.

Creating Formulas

By using formula, Excel spreadsheet exerts its possibilities even more. Here is a simple example of what it can do with formula. Column C shows each item’s total of expenses within 5 months. Row #9 shows a total of expenses in each month from August to December. Since a sum formula has been used in this spreadsheet, it no longer requires calculation.

Creating Charts from Spreadsheet Data

Charting function of spreadsheet allows users to create visualized data. It is also one of the convenient and important tools in the program. These examples are still based on the previous example “College Expenses”

Chart A: Total expenses on each item through the school year (fall term).

Chart B: Total expenses in every month
